Abstract: This essay aims at no encyclopedic discussion on the surface theory. Instead, it is concerned with the interpretation of the theory in the context of contemporary Chinese practice. While most Chinese architects tend to neglect the social and cultural circumstance in which the Western theories were developed, will the discussion of a generic and timeless concept of the "skin" be able to make enough sense to its Chinese "body"? And what if we examine the surface theory in a pure "technical" sense? The discussion is organized around the key concept "body", leading us towards a sociologic understanding of the unique Chinese situation. In this situation, elite architects reluctantly deal with the inevitable confronting of the public and the private territories in their design by dissolving the surface issue in the rhetoric of "interfacing".
